Llanllawddog lake formerly owned by Mr Olive is where it all began back in 1980 on a school trip from Porth County Comprehensive School with Religious Education teacher Dave Roberts. Located in a valley bottom its lies in very picturesque part of Carmarthenshire, Wales.
The lake itself is horseshoe in shape with an inlet and outlet into a stream which feeds a nearby river. Trout are stocked from ponds close to “Home Farm” itself and seeing them provokes memories of when I used to go to Llanllawdog lake as a youngster and dream of fishing in the stock ponds!.
There is a short walk from the car park to the lake across a field where cows are kept..over an electric fence to the lakeside. The largest expanse of water(see second picture below)on the lake is opposite the road where you access the lane to drive down to the farm. Quite a casting distance can be acheived from here but beware of the various trees and shrubs etc on the centre of the lake. The trout always seem plentiful in rising to accept naturals off the lake surface and hence my preferred favourite here is a floater using a weighted braid tip. Back in my school days baby dolls and Jersey Herd Nymphs were the order of the day but nowadays I prefer to use Olive damsel nymphs and the wiggle nymph. Occasionally an small orange Dog Nobbler has worked here and quite recently Cat’s whiskers have worked extremely well.
